    Description

There are two items in this group.  First is a 1936 pass for Miss Jane Rider to sit in the reserved gallery of the US Senate on May 1st, 1936.  This is a beautiful piece printed on slick card stock approximately 4" by 3".  It has  a signature of Carl Hayden on it, I suppose stamped.  Second is a personal letter on Senate stationery from Hayden to the mayor of Safford, Arizona on June 13, 1941.  It concerns budgetary issues surrounding the National Youth Administration.  It has two pages and Hayden's personal signature on page 2.
Carl Hayden served decades in the US Congress, first as one of the first Representatives from Arizona, from just before statehood in 1912 to 1969.  He was the first senator to serve seven terms.. He became known as the "Dean of the Senate" and was known as an advocate for the appropriate development of the American West.
